A giant chrome garden gnome

A giant chrome garden gnome is not what you would normally expect to see on the back of a truck, but last week the nine-metre-tall statue set off on its way to its permanent home.

Dandenong Heavy Haulage (DHH) was commissioned to move the statue, which weighs around four tonnes.

The chrome garden gnome was loaded using a crane so that it could be transported from Frankston to the McClelland Sculpture Park.

The work created by Gregor Kregar is actually titled Reflective Lullaby, but is affectionately known as "Frankie".

The garden gnome was originally commissioned for the Peninsula Link Freeway in Karingal, where it remained for four years. At the end of this period, the McClelland Sculpture Park lent it to its latest location in Frankston, where it remained for another four years.

However, on Thursday, the giant gnome was loaded onto a tilt platform before its journey.

It was then transported from the corner of McMahons and Hastings Road in Frankston to the McClelland Sculpture Park in Langwarrin.

Rodney Smith, transport manager at DHH, explained how the garden gnome was secured to the truck: "They bolted the gnome to a concrete base. Before we arrived at the site, they unbolted it and fitted a cradle underneath to hold the gnome above the truck bed," he said.

Although this is the third time in eight years that Frankie has been transported to a new location by truck, it is the first time that DHH has been involved.

Tony Ireson took part in the operation as a pilot. "I have to admit that we were a little worried when we received the contract," he said. "But everything was well organised and that was the most important thing. There was a proper base for the garden gnome to lie on.

According to Ireson, about 90% of their work involves transporting machinery. "I don't think we'll move anything stranger," he joked.

"We have transported many other things that are a bit unusual, but nothing as unusual as a nine-metre-long garden gnome."
