Here is the greatest love story with garden gnomes: Gnomeo and Juliet
The first fifteen minutes of this animated film seem to confirm what you could imagine at worst: cartoonish main characters, ultra-sentimental gags and sentimentality ... But soon humorous pop culture references appear in the story, which give the adult viewer a kick in this cartoon film (especially the reference to Apple is well done), and the supporting characters like the frog prove to be even crazier than the main characters. For connoisseurs, some Shakespearean allusions are also sprinkled here and there: Othello, The Tempest, etc.

As far as the visual quality of the film is concerned, the world of the garden gnomes with many kitschy elements is quite well thought out and looks original and colorful. The animation, on the other hand, lags a bit behind compared to the newer productions of the big studios, although some scenes like the lawnmower race tend to contradict me. As for the music, the most famous titles by Elton John were adapted for the film, but it is not as omnipresent as in a Disney production.
Yes, as expected, Gnomeo and Juliet do not play in the same league as the Disney or Dreamworks productions: The driving forces are very classic, both through the childishly positive treatment of this adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in a world of garden gnomes and through the pop references that were placed to make adults smile, and some of which have already been seen elsewhere. But you have to admit that after the first fifteen minutes you have a pleasant time with this animated film, sometimes laugh and finally end up quite satisfied. A family film that is well suited for the winter holidays.
